Alessandro Altobelli believes Inter still have some way to go before being at the same level of Juventus and Napoli but has been left impressed by the early start of Antonio Conte’s tenure at the club.
“Conte’s Inter is looking good. Inter is not yet at the level of Juventus and Napoli, but there is good energy about them. However it is forbidden to say that we will be the surprise of the season,” he told La Repubblica.
He then looked ahead to this evening’s match with Slavia Prague.
“Inter must win at all costs today and also do so in the return leg. With Barcelona and Borussia in the group, if you don’t beat the Slavia Prague it becomes all too difficult.”
Next he was asked whether he thought Antonio Conte could have recovered Mauro Icardi.
“I think so. With Antonio they all play well, and would have been able to make him think, but Inter did well to push him away. Mauro is one of the five strongest strikers in the world, but in the past few months he has made only wicked decisions. Nobody misses that. Today Inter is a nice group, you can see that.”
He concluded by touching upon Antonio Conte hitting out at Maurizio Sarri complaining about scheduling.
“In reminding Sarri that Juventus is the strongest, Conte has made it clear to Inter fans that he is 100% in the Nerazzurri project. He was clever. Herrera did it, Mourinho does it too. The real dispute this year is between the Marotta and Paratici. It adds more to the rivalry between Inter and Juve.”
