Massimo Moratti has spoken on a range of Inter related topics, starting with the players of Inter’s Triplete winning side, at an event specially dedicated to him.
“It was a moment of great happiness. The players have a chat and it’s a very nice thing. They are still in touch, this is beautiful. I’m not in this chat but sometimes I hear from some players, they come to see me, they are very affectionate. Many of them, like Samuel Eto’o, still call me dad. Marco Materazzi called me it too,” he explained to the gathered media.
He was then asked how it feels to still be referred to as the president, despite not holding the position for a few years now.
“I don’t know if it’s very modest of me to say but I think it is beautiful. I am very pleased with the affection shown to me by the fans.”
Next he spoke on his memories of Jose Mourinho.
“He was intelligent and had a lot of professionalism. There was a beautiful, affectionate relationship between us when he was in charge. Mourinho is not easy to work with as a manager as he is very demanding but he was the only coach to have never asked me for a specific player.
“Mourinho came to my attention when he was coaching Porto and drew the Champions League semi-final at home to Deportivo La Coruna and after the game he said he was already thinking about the final. There and then I knew he was a phenomenon. When we first met, I asked him if he would consider coaching Inter and he told me, ‘from today, I already feel like the coach for Inter.’ He was always very serious.
“I came to an agreement with Mourinho after Mancini’s goodbye. Mancini laid the foundations by creating the team that Mourinho later found himself in charge of and which he improved by winning everything with.
“Mourinho reassured me a lot because he studied the opposing teams very well. He knew everything from the opposition team’s movements to their coach. This also gave me confidence.”
He was then asked if Mourinho can be compared to current Inter boss Antonio Conte and vice versa.
“I’m not in the club anymore, so I don’t know what the methods of Conte are and what his relationship with the players is like. What I do know is he is very attentive and in this regard he is as good as Mourinho but I don’t know him well enough to make comparisons.”
He then spoke on the difference between when he was in charge compared to know, with Inter owned by Chinese e-commerce giants Suning.
“Inter now has the Zhang family in charge, who lead a huge industry. I don’t know if the Triplete was the last triumph of a certain time in football but the players’ salaries have reached such a level meaning that only the very largest industries can play the game.”
Speaking on San Siro and its pending demolition in the coming years he added: “I have been going to the San Siro since I was a child, emotionally and rationally it seems to me an exaggeration to demolish it but you have to factor in the financial costs and the clubs best interests.
“Inter are convinced about the idea of the new stadium. For them it is the new Duomo and therefore it will be beautiful, we will get used to it. The world will go on.”
