Following Inter’s 2-1 Champions League group stage loss to Barcelona last night, Gazzetta dello Sport have praised the Nerazzurri for how far they have come compared to the last time they faced off against the Blaugrana at the Camp Nou.
“Inter’s performance at the Camp Nou is like the Sagrada Familia: incomplete, but beautiful and exciting. Inter went immediately ahead against a Barca side who had not lost in their previous 32 home games in the Champions League,” the report begins.
“The Nerazzurri had chances to double their lead and deserved to have a penalty, which referee Damir Skomina, chose to ignore, something which rightly infuriated Antonio Conte. Where was VAR?
“Arturo Vidal’s entry on the pitch in the second half allowed Lionel Messi to get into the game and he and Luis Suarez turned the game on its head.
“That is the ruthless nature of the Champions League: the great players decide the matches. The defeat to Barca and the victory of Borrussia Dortmund in Prague means Inter’s next two meetings with the German’s must win matches.
“The bitterness at the end result does not, however, cancel out the performance of the Nerazzurri. Conte had asked for “another step” of growth: he obtained it.
“There can be no comparison made to the Inter side who also lost at Camp Nou last year. This Inter side immediately went about and played their game and ran forward with courage.
“Inter, who suffered the first official defeat of the season, must not walk head down into the match with Juventus but rather with the conviction of being stronger than they thought.”
The report concludes by praising Inter duo Stefano Sensi and Nicolo Barella.
“Sensi and Barella were so good. They were the best players and they showed a lot of heart equal to their talent. This is good news also for Italy manager Roberto Mancini.
