In an extremely rare interview, Mauro Icardi has told Gazzetta dello Sport that he wishes Inter well this season despite his departure in acrimonious circumstances during the Summer transfer window.

After months off controversy both on and off the field, Inter managed to offload the 26-year-old striker on a season long loan deal to PSG, with the French outfit also having an option to sign him permanently.

“I didn’t expect so much support from the PSG fans. They welcomed me right from my first warm-up at Parc des Princes. I then had the good fortune of playing right away against Real Madrid, before picking up a slight injury,” he began.

“I’m fine now, I’ve got going again, even if I have to keep working because I had a complicated summer and I wasn’t 100 percent when I arrived in Paris.”

He was then asked what he would do if PSG were to draw Inter in the Champions League knockout stages.

“If PSG were to face Inter, I’d live it in the best way. If it was up to me, I’d go out as a professional and give my best to defend my new shirt.

“I’m at PSG this season and my objective is to give my best for this shirt. Then, at the end of the season, around May or June time, we’ll see what happens. It’s still too early to say anything.

“I can only wish the best for Inter in every competition. I still have many friends in Milan. With Conte, it can be a good year for the Scudetto.”

To conclude, he came to the defence of his successor Romelu Lukaku, who joined the Nerazzurri in a club record transfer deal.

“I don’t think Lukaku is experiencing a moment of difficulty. Indeed, I think he started well, scoring a couple of goals immediately. Then he too was injured and maybe this fact raised the usual criticisms but it is not easy for anyone to play in Italy.”
