Inter Manager Conte: “We’re Much More Of A Team, We Want To Progress, We Won’t Change The Way We Play”

Antonio Conte spoke with the gathered media at the Sinobo Stadium ahead of Inter’s crucial Champions League group stage tie against Slavia Prague tomorrow night.

“There is a desire to do well and it makes no sense today, before the game, to cry about absences. I have always asked for answers from the team and they have always given them to me therefore I feel peaceful,” he began.

“I have a reliable group that is able to find an inner strength and energy when in difficulty that enables them to go beyond the obstacle.

“We know the importance of tomorrow’s game. I have to look at those who I have available to me and I have full confidence in those who are part of the team.

“Tomorrow we will play our cards knowing that it will be a difficult match and that we will have to suffer, as we did against Barcelona, Dortmund and in the first leg against Slavia.

“It is a stimulating game that we must play with enthusiasm and an awareness that we are growing as a team and that we come into this game more compact than we did in the first meeting.

“Tomorrow the result becomes important beyond the fact that we can play good or bad. I assume that the result often depends on the performance and if the performance is positive then there is usually also a good result. We want these things to go hand in hand because we are growing and playing well and creating opportunities.

“I want to see more growth from the team. Compared to the first meeting we are much more of a team, more prepared and we have had more time to get to know eachother and understand how we want to play. We have taken important steps and I hope we can continue on in Europe, we need it to continue growing.”

Conte was then asked how games in Europe differ to games played domestically in Europe.

“Barcelona won La Liga and are always one of the best in the Champions League, Dortmund are the antagonist of Bayern Munich in Germany whilst Slavia Prague is winning the Czech title. Teams in this competition all have a winning mentality which they have acquired over time on the pitch together.

“In Italy there are strong teams but it is normal that in the Champions League you encounter more difficulties. We have started a path together with the player and we want to grow in Europe as well as in Italy.

“It’s still early days for us in Europe, we’re a newborn side, but at the same time we want to grow and it is important for us to move forward.”

He was then asked what impact failure to progress would have on the team’s transfer market ambitions.

“It does not seem right to talk about it with anyone other than the leadership. This is not the time to talk on this topic.

“We must talk about those here right now and thank them for who they are because they have got us this far and have done something important, let’s think about tomorrow.

“It’s an important game and it is up to us to progress to the next round. We want to do this. I am expecting a nice open game where the best team will win.”

He was then asked more about the team’s growth.

“We have been working since the first day of pre-season with the boys, we are working on a fairly clear idea and it is important that the players have embraced the idea that we have. I see no reason to change what we are doing.

“Everyone knows the score when it comes to being called upon to play. I am peaceful and I have the utmost confidence in my players.

“We will not change the way that we play. It would be unnatural and not positive, we are getting important answers and we have to continue like this.”

In conclusion he spoke on the status of the injured players.

“Politano and Gagliardini are here with us, unlike Barella, Sensi and Asamoah.”
