Inter have hit out at former manager Luciano Spalletti after he claimed the club were happy to pay him to stay at home.
AC Milan contacted Spalletti with regards to their then vacant managerial post but due to still being on Inter’s payroll Spalletti was unable to accept their offer.
Spalletti and the club held talks over severance pay but could not come to an agreement and the club have now confirmed that it was Spalletti who was behind this failure rather than themselves.
“In addition to the compensation accrued by Mr. Spalletti, the club had proposed a further economic offer as an incentive to leave, which was not accepted,” an unnamed spokesperson for the club has told Italian news agency ANSA.
Spalletti managed Inter for two seasons between 2017 and 2019 and was relieved of his duties this past Summer so Inter could bring in former Italian national team manager Antonio Conte.
The 60-year-old managed Inter in 90 competitive matches during his tenure in charge. He won 46 of these games and led the club to Champions League qualification in consecutive seasons.
