Former Inter President Moratti: “Ronaldo Was The Player That Made Inter Truly Known In Every Part Of The World”

In an interview with Italian broadcaster Sport Mediaset, former Inter owner and president Massimo Moratti has reflected on his first day in charge at the club some 25 years ago today.

Moratti bought a controlling stake in the Nerazzurri from Ernesto Pellegrini and remembers that his time at the helm of the club got off to the best possible start.

“I remember the courtesy Pellegrini showed me before the game against Brescia. He took me to the dressing room and introduced me to the team. The great thing is that then we won and it was a good debut for everyone,” he explained in the interview.

Moratti then went on to discuss when Inter won their famous trouble in the 2009/10 season whilst Jose Mourinho was in charge of the team.

“We created the conditions to succeed at the club. We managed to find satisfaction and I always believed in it but at some points it seemed like it was going to be impossible.”

He proceeded to speak on some of the best players that played for the club during his tenure as owner and president between 1995 and 2013.

“Il Fenomeno obviously remains unforgettable, he was the strongest of all and the player that made us truly known in every part of the world. Baggio was also a great player. I remember his class and his elegance.

“His performances against Real Madrid in the Champions League and European play-off in Verona against Parma are unforgettable. It was a delight to see him play.

“My biggest regret is Pirlo. I wanted him and then signed him because I knew he was strong but it is a pity that none of the coaches could get the best out of him so I was forced to sell him and could see the sadness in his face when I had to.”

Moratti, who often still attends Inter’s games, spoke on the current Inter side and how their season has gone.

“The defeat at the Olimpico can be a lesson for the team but the team is there and above all the manager.”

In conclusion he spoke on Inter new boy Christian Eriksen who joined the club in the recent January transfer window.

“For players like him you have to create the most appropriate type of game plan and that it is how they make you win. Doing it mid-season is not easy though.”
