Inter chief executive Giuseppe ‘Beppe’ Marotta has confirmed that the club want to do well in the Europa League moments before the first leg of their Europa League round of 32 clash away to Bulgarian champions Ludogorets.
“Do we want to win? Without a doubt. Inter must compete in every competition and always obtain the best results,” Marotta remarked in an interview with Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia on the sidelines of the pitch at the Ludogorets Arena.
He was then asked about January transfer window recruit Christian Eriksen and if he would like to see the player playing more. The Danish international is in the starting line-up for just the second time since his arrival from Spurs.
“This is the desire we and all the fans have but the coach knows best when it comes to knowing when to insert players into the team.
“He watches them carefully in training and with us being in three competitions it means everyone is available and a first choice, there are no second choice players here.”
Marotta was then asked if he could provide an update on the condition of Inter captain and number one goalkeeper Samir Handanovic, who has missed the past few weeks due to a hairline fracture to the small finger in his left hand.
“I think it will take a few days, the doctors will evaluate him. We hope he will recover over the next week or so.”
In conclusion Marotta was asked about Lionel Messi’s recent comments about wanting Lautaro Martinez to join him at Barcelona.
“I think it is a reason for him [Lautaro] and those who brought him here to Inter to be proud. The fact that a champion like Messi praises his compatriot means that perhaps he sees qualities in him that lead him to believe he is his heir.
“They can also be words of encouragement for him, he is young and can improve. The comments can be a stimulus for him.”
