In an interview with Italian radio station Radio Nerazzurra earlier on today, legendary Inter defender Riccardo Ferri has reflected on Inter’s performance in last night’s 2-0 win over Ludogorets in the first leg of their Europa League round of 32 tie.
“It was a difficult game, there were seven changes made compared to the team that started against Lazio and the most needy players played. In the second half something more was seen,” Ferri explained.
“It was evident that Eriksen had some difficulty in the first half but in the second he showed his quality as did the whole team. In the final third he can be devastating. This game will have helped him to better understand what he needs to do.”
Ferri then went on to discuss Daniele Padelli, who has been standing in for the injured Samir Handanovic, in between the sticks for Inter as of late.
“Replacing Handanovic would be difficult for anyone, even for Buffon. Padelli is someone who has played little but I would not blame Padelli because like everyone else he needs to play to understand things that it is not possible to in training. I still trust him.”
He then proceeded to discuss Romelu Lukaku and Inter’s continued reliance on him to deliver.
“I have never seen a player as complete as him. I think someone else like Lukaku is hard to find. He is difficult to replace.
“He has shown he is selfless as seen when he gave Esposito that penalty and he has helped to bring a sense of belonging that has been lacking in recent years. When you see someone like Lukaku give his soul and finish games exhausted, it is appreciated by the fans.”
He then shared his views on the possible sale of Lautaro Martinez in the upcoming Summer transfer window amid continued links to the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid in particular.
“This year Lautaro has showed us unique things, I think with him being young he can still improve and I hope he can stay.”
In conclusion Ferri spoke on the fact that Inter are in the race for the title.
“This year Inter did not start out with the idea of winning the Scudetto. They built a competitive team to understand where they needed to make improvements. At this point of the season, we can be satisfied and we can think positively about the future.”
Ferri spent all barring two years of his 15 year playing career on Inter’s books between the years 1981 and 1994. The centre back made no less than 418 appearances across all competitions for Inter and helped the team win one Serie A title and two UEFA Cup’s during his time with the team.
