Inter CEO Beppe Marotta Confirms: “Samir Handanovic To Return To Training With The Ball From Tomorrow”

Prior to Inter’s Europa League round of 32 second leg match at home to Ludogorets, Inter chief executive Giuseppe ‘Beppe’ Marotta spoke with Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia and firstly spoke on the fact the game is being played behind closed doors.

“It is certainly surreal, the fans are a fundamental component of football, without the fans emotions are diminished but there is a very clear law decree that is valid until Sunday at midnight, playing behind closed doors is a forced thing but protection of citizens must be safeguarded. We accept these decisions albeit reluctantly.”

Marotta then went on to provide an update on the status of Inter captain and number one goalkeeper Samir Handanovic who has missed the past few weeks due to injury.

“He’s on his way to making a complete recovery, tomorrow he will train with the ball. It will then be up to Conte to decide who to play, but the fracture has healed and he can therefore return to the group.”

He then went on to speak about the importance of experience when building a squad.

“Beyond the individual value that the players have, experience is important, We are looking for young talents to mix with people with international level experience. This is the path we started in June and we will continue with this because this is what we want.”

Marotta then went on to discuss January transfer window recruit Christian Eriksen and how Inter manager Antonio Conte has used him so far.

“He is a quality player, there was a great opportunity in January and we took it. Conte has rightly been very cautious because his philosophy envisages the gradual insertion of the players. Eriksen is entering a new tactical system, it will take patience but Conte is trying to instil the right tactical mentality in him.”

Next Marotta was asked how much difference there is between the Champions League and Europa League now Inter have had the chance to experience both competitions this season.
“The Europa League is different compared to the Champions League, although the motivation ought to remain the same.

“You have to change your training schedule because sometimes when travelling you do not return until the Friday morning. Regardless, you have to honour this competition, even in surreal contexts like this because playing without an audience increases the difficulties for the players.”

In conclusion he was asked how Conte is treating the game given his Juventus past as both a player and more recently as a manager.
“He is treating it just like a normal league game, he wants to give his maximum and receive the maximum from the players. Now he is focused on this game, then from tomorrow he will think about that important but not fundamental match.”
