Inter CEO Beppe Marotta Furious: “The League Has Been Distorted”

Inter CEO Beppe Marotta discussed the late postponement of the game against Juventus in an interview in today’s paper edition of the Milano based newspaper Corriere della Sera.

“Late postponement? Yes, of course. The league has been distorted in this way, we have to guarantee its regularity, safeguard its competitiveness and in this way, it hasn’t been done at all. A decision like that, a few hours before the match, is very serious.”

Marotta then spoke about how Lega Serie A changed their minds, after saying on Thursday that the games would be played behind closed doors.

“The government gives certain guidelines, but football has its own rules, it is a social phenomenon with an impact and Lega Serie A cannot decide things in this chaotic way. On Thursday there is a statement that says we’ll play, on Saturday there is another statement to close the games, is that possible? Playing behind closed doors would have been a bad thing, but the decision-making chain was all wrong.”

The Nerazzurri CEO didn’t blame Juventus for the decision and instead spoke about the president of Lega Serie A, Paolo Dal Pino.

“I don’t care to blame Juventus. If it was the government that pushed the League there is no other blame. My criticism, however, goes to the president of the League, Paolo Dal Pino, who decided without meeting an emergency council, without talking to anyone, it’s wrong. It was necessary to safeguard the league, or else certain discussions would inevitably emerge.”

Finally, Marotta touched on what he would do to fix the busy calendar and games being played behind closed doors.

“The idea of playing behind closed doors was and could be used. Now the closed doors are no longer possible. They have postponed five games so as not to play without an audience, why should the home team agree to play behind closed doors next Sunday? If you play now, you’ll do it behind closed doors. The risk of closure of Serie A exists. There are no more dates, the calendar is too busy, now the date and venue of the Coppa Italia must also be moved. There’s been chaos and I’ll say it again, we need to go down from 20 to 18 teams.”

Five Serie A games were postponed from this game day due to fears about the spread of the Coronavirus. Those games were the Derby d’Italia against Juventus, Udinese against Fiorentina, AC Milan against Genoa, Parma against SPAL and Sassuolo against Brescia. The postponement means that Lazio are now top of the league table, as none of their games have been postponed so far.
