Spanish Epidemiologist Urges Spanish Government To Consider Taking Measures Ahead Of Inter’s Trip To Take On Getafe

Spanish doctor and epidemiologist Fernando Simon has urged the Spanish government to take action ahead of Inter’s trip to Spain to take on Getafe in the coming weeks in the Europa League amid the ongoing Coronavirus situation in Italy.

It is understood that there are no less than 1600 confirmed cases of the virus in Italy, a figure that has rose significantly over the course of the past week or so.

Inter are due to take on Getafe on March 19 in the second leg of their Europa League last 16 clash and Simon, who is the director of the Spanish Coordinating Centre for Health Alerts and Emergencies at the Ministry of Health Social Services and Equality, has shared his belief that the Spanish government should think about limiting those coming from affected areas into the country.

“It is not possible to control travel in general, but when there are movements of very large groups of people who come from areas where they are not allowed to be together, we should think twice before allowing large groups of people to gather here,” he remarked in an interview with Spanish television station La Sexta earlier on today.

“I am not a member of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, but I would say we should be careful with fans from the risk areas of northern Italy who want to come to Spain and look for ways for them to not get here.”

He then went on to speak about the current border controls in place: “Border controls have not shown to be particularly effective in being able to counter the phenomenon. “
