Italian Players Association President Tommasi: “I Hope We Can Get Back To Training Soon”

In an interview with Italian radio station Radio Anch’io Lo Sport earlier on today, Damiano Tommasi, the president of the Italian players association, has spoken on what he thinks the club’s current intentions are amid the ongoing global Coronavirus pandemic.

All sporting activity in Italy is on hold until at least April 3 due to a government decree but given the current situation, it is unlikely that activity will resume on that date.

“I think they [the clubs] are thinking about aligning themselves with the decisions of the whole country. Right now, I don’t know anything more than that,” he started.

“We are talking about the month of March, we are talking about a recovery that is not yet fixed, because it can’t be defined yet but I think salaries are the last thing we are thinking about.

“At the moment, I’m not very optimistic that we align ourselves with the country.”

He was then asked what it would mean if football could be played again in August.

“It would be a positive thing to get back playing in August, we would all like to get back to playing, as it would mean the situation has improved. There are still technical details, though and issues relating to contracts and deadlines.

“If you are playing far ahead in time, you have to plan many things. Right now, you can’t move away from your own town, so it’s difficult to predict things.

In conclusion he was asked about his thoughts on when teams could make a return to training.

“I hope we can get back to training soon because it would mean that Italy has solved or is solving this moment.”

It currently remains unclear when the season could resume if at all. Many reports at the moment are currently speculating about the potential financial impact of the situation with estimates for losses ranging from €167 million if the season finishes all the way to €720 million if it does not finish.
