The Italian football federation (FIGC) have extended the cut-off date to end the 2019/20 season from June 30 to August 2 to allow for a few extra days to help finish the season off, they have confirmed with an official statement posted on their website.
Football at all levels in Italy has been on hold for over a month now due to the ongoing global Coronavirus pandemic and in the past few days Lega Serie A and all 20 clubs voted unanimously in favour of the season resuming and finishing when possible if the Italian government allow it.
Reports have suggested that teams could return to training in little over a week’s time with a view to resuming playing a few weeks after that either at the end of May or beginning of June.
“The world of football is working incessantly and in responsible fashion to find concrete and sustainable solutions to the crisis generated by COVID-19, including those necessary to safeguard the 2020-21 competitions,” Italian football federation president Gabriele Gravina said as part of the statement.
He then went on to thank Italian government minister for sport and youth policies Vincenzo Spadafora and insisted that FIGC want to return to playing.
“I thank Minister for Sport Vincenzo Spadafora for the attention he gave to us in yesterday’s meeting, where our approach was clearly laid out: we want to return to playing football in safety because that is what common sense dictates and we are asked to do so by the international organisations, of which Italian football is a part.
“I will send the medical protocol we drew up to the CONI, ready to listen to any precious advice.”
He concluded by hitting out at those who have claimed football has been given preferential treatment at this difficult time.
“I am stunned that I have to again realise the temptation to talk constantly about football, for the notoriety that this brings, prompts some to comment on things they are evidently not well-informed about.”
