Inter vice president Javier Zanetti has confirmed that the club are not thinking about what could happen with Lautaro Martinez in the coming months amid ongoing links to La Liga side Barcelona.
“When we bought him, we knew very well how he would develop. We were waiting for this moment,” Zanetti remarked during an Instagram Live chat with former Inter teammate Christian Vieri late last night.
“He trains well with Conte and can still improve and give us a lot. In this difficult period, we haven’t thought about what will happen but I find him happy here with his teammates, he’s having fun and he gets along very well with Lukaku.”
Zanetti also went on to reveal that he could have played on past the age of 40 but did not want to play long enough for people to notice a visible decline in his ability.
“I tore my Achilles at 39-years-old, I knew it was serious, but my only thoughts were to come back. When I retired at 40, I could have played on, I felt good physically, my teammates wanted me to, but I decided to leave the game before I declined.”
He also spoke on the progress that the Nerazzurri have made under the stewardship of former Italian national team manager Antonio Conte this season.
“This year we have seen great progress. There are many young players here and the goal is to compete to win and with Conte there are the conditions to do so.”
In conclusion Zanetti spoke on how he finds his role as vice president of the club, a role which he took up pretty much immediately after he retired from playing back in 2014.
“I like it. I didn’t expect it from Thohir. It’s a prestigious role. I had to prepare and start from scratch, the life of an executive is very different.
“Now, in addition to the sports side of things, I also manage the commercial side with UEFA and FIFA, and I like it. When you stop playing, you can’t expect everything to be handed to you due to your career. You have to study and know how to behave. It is completely new.”
Zanetti spent nearly his entire career on Inter’s books and in 19 years with the club he made no less than 860 appearances across all competitions, which is the most any player has ever made for the team.
