Finally, after 7 seasons of wandering the Europa League / domestic football wilderness, Inter are back in the Champion’s League, with their first top-flight European match taking place on Tuesday the 18th of September. It has been a long, arduous, yet never uninteresting few years, with one of Italy’s most successful clubs falling by the wayside thanks to mismanagement and poor performances on the pitch. Now, with world-class players like Mauro Icardi and Ivan Perisic firing on all cylinders, they’ve got a chance to progress in Europe and become a feature of the competition, rather than just an irregular visitor.
There is however a bit of a problem. Inter don’t exactly have the easiest of opponents in group B, with PSV Eindhoven, Tottenham Hotspur and the mighty FC Barcelona standing in their way of the knockout stages. This has ensured the bookies have all but written them off, with Inter at 70/1 to win the Champions League in May. Just how tough will each of these opponents be, can Inter surprise the sport betting community and ease past them to climb the group table?
PSV
An stalwart of Champion’s League and Europa League football, PSV will definitely act as a bogey team for Inter. Statistically the weakest team in the group, PSV still aren’t pushovers, with plenty of experience of navigating group games, having made it to the round of 16 in 2015/16 and practically walking their fixtures so far. They have had a year off however, and don’t feature the same household names in their squad, so should offer guaranteed points if Inter play well. The last time they met in the Champion’s League was back in 2007, so there aren’t any recent results that Inter can take comfort in.
Tottenham
Probably the most matched team to Inter, Spurs are enjoying a solid spell under Mauricio Pochettino and will certainly offer Inter a serious challenge. Players like Harry Kane, Cristian Erikson, Dele Alli and Heung-Min Son all enjoyed great performances in last season’s group matches, until they were undone by a very strong Juventus side in the round of 16. Spurs are also Europa League experts, having appeared in the format almost every year for the last decade, so they know how to handle the extra midweek games.
Barcelona
Simply put, the biggest challenge for not only Inter but every other team in the group. Barca have too many ultra-world-class players to be taken lightly, and will be in the competition with a vengeance this year after seeing an opportunity to go up against a Real Madrid side in transition. We’re sure you’ll know the damage that the likes of Messi, Dembele, Rakitic, Suarez and co can cause and Inter will need to come up with something special to stop them in their tracks.
Our final table prediction:
Barcelona
Inter
Tottenham
PSV
