Following his man of the match performance in the 2-1 win over Empoli, Gazzetta dello Sport have reflected on Inter captain Samir Handanovic’s season.

“In Serie A, Handanovic repeated last year’s feat of keeping 17 clean sheets taking his total clean sheets in his seven years at Inter up to 106,” the report from the Milan based newspaper begins.

“Midway through the season, an extra weight was placed upon his shoulders as he was chosen by the club to become the new captain in place of Mauro Icardi.

“At almost 35-years-old, he was named as the best goalkeeper of the season. Handanovic has a contract with Inter until 2021 and there is nobody out there who can take his place defending Inter’s goal.”

The report concludes by looking ahead to next season.

“With Pellissier’s retirement and the practically certain farewell of De Rossi from Italy, Handanovic will go into the next season with the most appearances in Serie A with 443 to his name.”
