Kwadwo Asamoah Wants To Play In Midfield For Ghana At Africa Cup Of Nations

Kwadwo Asamoah wants to return to playing in midfield when he represents Ghana at this summer’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The 30-year-old spent the 2018-19 season at left-back under Luciano Spalletti at Inter, despite being tried in central midfield during the Nerazzurri’s preseason fixtures.

Ghana have been drawn into Group F alongside Cameroon, Benin and Guinea-Bissau and Asamoah today expressed a preference for playing in the middle of the pitch.

“I can play in midfield, I can play in an attacking role and I can also play as a full-back with offensive duties,” he told TV3, as reported by modernghana.com.

“I’ve spoken with the coach and he knows what I can do for the national team. I told him he knows perfectly well I can play in midfield, which is a more important position than full-back.”

Asamoah said he would not be as comfortable playing at left-back for his national team as he was for Inter, explaining the differences in how the game is played on both continents.

“African football is different to football in Europe,” he added.

“In Europe you play where the coach asks you but it’s a more physical game in Africa and there isn’t much space on the pitch.

“I wouldn’t find it easy to play at full-back for Ghana but everyone knows I fare better in midfield.

“In any case, though, if they need me to help out at full-back I’m available.”

Asamoah has made 71 appearances for Ghana since making his senior debut in February 2009.
