Inter Defender Godin: “To Do Well You Have To Be A Team, We’re Learning A Lot With Conte”

Ahead of tonight’s Champions League match with Barcelona, Inter defender Diego Godin has spoken on what he thinks is required in order to be successful in the competition.

“So far I have learned and I have seen that, in order to do well, you have to be a team and know what it means to be a team. All players must commit to defending every ball and do whatever it takes from the defensive point of view,” he explained in an interview with tournament organisers UEFA.

“We need to know how to move when we don’t have the ball to help our teammates, defend and win back the ball. All 11 players must do so. It is essential.”

He was then asked what he has learned from working under Antonio Conte.

“We learn every day. It is a daily process, above all because for us he is a new coach. For now we are in a phase of adaptation and development. The coach tells us his concepts, makes us understand how he wants us to play, how the team must work and his mentality.

“He also conveys his passion, his way of living life and football: this is also very important. Not only does he explain his tactical concepts, but also his way of “feeling” football, which has the same importance. We are learning a lot.”

In conclusion, he was asked whether the fact Italian football is known for its solid defences was a reason behind him joining the Nerazzurri.

“Yes, perhaps, but it wasn’t the only reason. I am more suited to Italian football. From a cultural point of view, Italy and Spain are more similar than to England.”
