Materazzi: “Barcelona Don’t Scare Their Opponents Anymore, Inter Is Very Solid”

Ahead of tonight’s match between Barcelona and Inter, legendary Inter defender Marco Materazzi shared his thoughts on the game.

“What should the Nerazzurri do to win? First of all, they must not concede a goal. We’ll see if Messi plays, otherwise it will be a pity for football but it would be good for Inter because Messi is football. It’s impossible to stop him, I have to hope he has a bad day if he does play,” he explained in an interview with Marca.

“Barcelona are always strong, but they don’t scare their opponents anymore. They’re not the team of 2010, that will never come back. Now they have three or four phenomenons on the pitch but back then there were 10 of them and an alien named Messi.”

The Italian also reflected on Inter’s famous performance away to Barcelona on their road to winning the Champions League.

“Jose Mourinho insisted that we should not make any mistakes if we wanted to progress. It was very important to score at home and we did that. That Barcelona was almost unbeatable, they were one of the strongest teams in history. After the first leg, we went to Barcelona with confidence, even though we knew that anything could have happened with Messi on the field.”

He then spoke on what he makes of Antonio Conte’s Inter side.

“Inter is very solid, they are a team who concede very few goals. Everyone is very organised behind the ball, it is very difficult to deal with. Conte has brought solidity. It is not easy when there are so many new arrivals and a new coach. You cannot expect a show immediately but the foundations are being built.

“Godin has brought a great deal of experience. Sanchez was among the last to arrive, we need to have patience with him. Lukaku is meanwhile a player who sacrifices a lot for the team.”
