Inter Midfielder Joao Mario: “Racism Happens Every Week In Italy, It’s Sad”

In an interview with CNN, Inter central midfielder Joao Mario has spoken on the topic of racism in football following several high profile incidents this season, especially in Italy.

“It happens every week in Italy. It’s sad although I’m not there anymore but when I can, I try to see the newspapers, Twitter and news networks, it’s always the same,” the Portuguese international, who is currently on loan at Lokomotiv Moscow, said.

“It’s always the same so they need to sue people and arrest people until they understand they need to respect people, of all colours. It’s a football game, everyone loves football. In Italy, they love football, so they need to change.

“People need to change in Italy. For me, it’s really sad because I used to live there. It even happened to me on the pitch. The police, the government, the mentality in Italy needs to change. They need to start taking these things. It’s a really important matter.”
