Former Inter striker Aldo Serena has sang the praises of Inter’s on-form strike partnership of Lautaro Martinez and Romelu Lukaku.

“I expected them to make this impact given their individual qualities but I did not expect them to have such a deep understanding with one another because it is not easy to do that in such a short time. There has to be empathy in order to find such harmony both on and off the field,” he explained in an interview which appeared in today’s print edition of Tuttosport.

He moved on to discuss what he likes about Lukaku and Martinez individually.

“Lukaku has a unique generosity, he works entirely for the team. He is not envious or selfish. He is enthralling and in saying that I do not mean just in terms of his physicality. He is impossible to stop, defenders just bounce off of him. He is a tank and I admire him.

“Lautaro is a model student. His movements on the field are the mirror of what Conte wants. The Argentine is a young champion who wants to learn and builds his future from day to day.

“Conte has played a part in his progression. The manager needs players who follow him and who give everything and he rewards them with a perfect system for them.

“Martinez, as well as Lukaku, is a player who give himself 100% to the team. And I tell you, it’s not easy because so much money is running around them and it is often easy to think more about yourself. The two Inter strikers seem to put all the sacrifice and interests of the team before their own.”

He was then asked about Mauro Icardi, who Inter loaned out to PSG.

“In my opinion this is a different conversation. Icardi remains an extraordinary goalscorer and is someone who makes few mistakes when in the penalty box, far less than Lukaku does for example. In my opionion Icardi would not have had the chance to do all that he has done for the Nerazzurri in Conte’s Inter.”

Next he spoke on the impact he thinks Edin Dzeko’s arrival would have had on Lautaro.

“He would have played less and he wouldn’t have had the peace of mind in the games that he has now, as evidenced by the first-time shots he took in Prague.”

He concluded by discussing the comparisons that have been made between Lautaro and Lukaku’s partnership and his partnership with Ramon Diaz.

“In my opinion, it is similar in the sense that we play for each other, are generous and enjoy the other scoring goals but technically speaking we are very different.

“I hear many liken Lukaku to Adriano, but the Brazilian was a solo artist. Physically they are alike, but I say he is more like Vieri: Bobo scored goals, but he also worked a lot for the team.

“The most obvious comparison for Lautaro is with Aguero. Both are not very tall, but strong and good at protecting the ball. Lautaro is lethal in front of goal.”
