Just over a week on from joining Inter, Christian Eriksen has today spoken with Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia to share how it is working with Antonio Conte and why he choose Inter among many other topics.
The 27-year-old Danish international attacking midfielder who joined the club on a four and a half year deal from Tottenham Hotspur, started by giving his first impressions since his arrival.
“The first impressions are very good. I received a very warm welcome from the club. It is a family run club and therefore it is very nice,” he said.
Eriksen proceeded to discuss the Inter fans and what he already knows about them.
“I know the culture of Italian fans, it is very different from in England, where you are very protected. Here you hear them a lot, with all the flags around them. I have already experienced it in the Champions League, I have also scored so I remember well.
“The atmosphere is very beautiful. I remember last year or two years ago, when Icardi and Vecino scored, the stadium exploded. “
He then admitted that it was easy for him to accept a move to Inter and what he hopes to do whilst with the club.
“In recent seasons I have been linked to many clubs, but Inter presented itself in a concrete and promising manner. It looked good and it was easy to say yes. I have came here to try to win something.”
Next he explained the reasoning behind his decision to select the number 24 shirt.
“Many numbers are already taken mid-season. 24 is a new challenge. I’ve had 23 for many years. It’s a higher number for a new adventure, it was easy to choose it.”
He also briefly touched upon what he gets up to away from football.
“When I don’t play I like being with family. We have a small child, we go to the playground and out to restaurants. In Italy there are many good choices. The only thing is that here we eat too late so we have to change the schedules. We like to relax too and maybe watch a movie.”
Eriksen then spoke on working with Inter manager Antonio Conte.
“I am happy that Conte considers me special and that he is happy because I chose Inter. It is also special for me to be here at Inter. There has been a lot of talk about me, but now I am here and I concentrate on what I have to.
“It is a winning situation for me. I wanted a new challenge and Inter gave me the chance. They told me that Conte is a tough coach as well as Pochettino. I just arrived and we are mid-season, so it is difficult to do comparisons.
“Up to now we have done a lot of running, even without the ball. With Pochettino it was the same. They are similar, even if they have a different idea of football. I don’t like running. I prefer to do it with the ball, but it’s part of the game.”
He then shared his excitement ahead of this weekend’s Milan derby.
“I can’t wait for the Milan derby. I have heard a lot about it, even if I have never seen it. I have seen a few clips, but never the whole game. Experiencing it at the stadium is different from watching it on television. They tell me it’s a very intense and important game for the season. It will be fun.”
He then explained why he chose a move to Inter.
“Winning is one of the reasons I’m here. Compared to where I was before, there are more chances to do it here. Losing the Champions League final was a big disappointment. One of those moments you would like to forget. I’m here to win and start something new. The last time I won I was at Ajax, many years ago. I hope to start over here.”
He also spoke on how he has found his new surroundings.
“I have had a nice impression of Milan so far. The climate is milder. I have been to beautiful cities and nice clubs. The food is fantastic and everything looks beautiful.”
The former Ajax player then spoke on his childhood footballing idols.
“As a child I had two idols, even if I didn’t follow football as much. In 2001 I played Football Manager and Roma was very strong, obviously with Totti. I followed him because of videos games. Growing up I followed Michael Laudrup, one of the greatest Danish footballers ever. I would say that Laudrup was my idol.”
Eriksen then discussed the comparisons that have been made between himself and former Inter midfielder Wesley Sneijder.
“I think it is difficult to make these comparisons. Maybe we look a bit alike. I am also losing my hair [laughs]. We both played in Ajax, so we come from the same school. Here he won everything.
“It would be nice follow his example. First in the Champions League we have to go back but now we are in the Europa League. We can talk about it next season. It is a difficult example to follow, but I think I am a different player from him.”
In conclusion he shared his hopes of winning the Serie A title.
“I hope it is possible to win the title and I think there are possibilities to do so. I would not say that it is in our hands, we have to think game after game.
“Juventus have won for many years and know what they are doing. We must have consistency and not lose touch with them. And then let’s see how it ends. My goal is to win something. In the middle of the season we are still in three competitions. We hope to raise a trophy, it would be the icing on the cake.”
