Inter legend Nicola Berti believes Inter are heading into this weekend’s second Derby della Madonnina of the season with AC Milan as the clear favourites.

Inter head into this match in second place in the Serie A table 19 points ahead of their city rivals who are sitting in eighth place the moment after 22 games played.

“We are clearly the favourites. We are not afraid of this AC Milan side because they do not have a player who can worry us, not even Zlatan Ibrahimovic. I think we will end up with a clear result in our favour, I will say 3-0 or 3-1,” he told newspaper Il Giornale.

Berti, who spent 10 years with Inter between 1988 and 1998 then spoke on what he thinks is different about Antonio Conte’s Inter compared to that of Luciano Spalletti’s.

“Antonio made us take an incredible leap in quality compared to the past. Perhaps Spalletti’s Inter had less quality but there is no comparison between the two teams. Conte has given a winning structure, now we are a real team, united and we can only improve.”

Next he spoke on things that have surprised him most about Inter this term.

“The thing that surprised me most is the understanding between Lautaro Martinez and Romelu Lukaku. If they had sold Lautaro this summer nobody would have said anything but instead he has proved to be a great player.

“Stefano Sensi’s performances at the beginning of the season surprised me too and I hope he will return to these levels after the injuries.”

Berti then commented on Mauro Icardi’s departure during the Summer transfer window and whether it was the right decision.

“His departure was a winning choice by the club and Conte. In the end, the three strongest players in the squad last year were sent away in Perisic, Nainggolan and Icardi and this turned out to be a good move because today we are a team that does not depend only on individuality.”

Next he spoke on Inter’s chances of winning the Serie A title come the end of this season.

“For the Scudetto the favourite remains Juventus because they have two teams. I think, however, that we can have our say until the end as new players have arrived who can make us jump in quality like Christian Eriksen. I believe that it will not be easy but it is not impossible, I believe.”

In conclusion Berti, who made over 250 appearances for the club, spoke on Inter’s owners, Chinese e-commerce giants, the Suning group.

“The Zhang family is doing something exceptional. We can only grow because in addition to being an economic power they have clear and well-defined ideas.

“They gave an identity to the club with the entrances of Beppe Marotta and Conte and with the return of Lele Oriali. We have improved in areas where we were previously deficient.”
