Watford’s Former Head Of Academy On Inter’s Ashley Young: “He Has Always Been A Talent, He Is A Guarantee”

Chris Cummins, the former head of Premier League club Watford’s academy, has recalled seeing new Inter defender Ashley Young for the first time as a youngster.

Young was picked up by the Hornets aged 10 back in 1995 and progressed through their youth ranks all the way to the first team, who he debuted for back in 2003.

Young spent four years in the Vicarage Road side’s first team before Aston Villa came calling. He spent four years with them before a nine year spell with Manchester United, who he latterly captained.

The 34-year-old joined Inter during the January transfer window on an initial six month contract with there being an option for his contract to be extended by a further season.

Since his arrival, the 39-time England international, who started out as a winger, has made three appearances across all competitions for Inter and has gained many plaudits in the Italian media.

“Ash was ten years old when I saw him for the first time. He has always been a talent. At 16 he was discarded by Watford, they were not prepared to offer him a scholarship,” Cummins explained in an interview which appeared in the print edition of Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I remember the meeting, it was terrible for him. He was just a boy and he sitting in front of four adults. He didn’t know what to say, playing football was his dream. He was upset and thought of giving up everything.

“He still showed up the next day. The other players had signed a full-time contract, he had a part-time one. They told him to train with the Under 17 or Under 16 sides. The boys were all younger than him.

“I was the coordinator and I followed him personally, and a few years later he made his debut in the first team. You know the rest of the story.”

Cummins concluded by adding: “He is a guarantee, he has a winning mentality. He can play in many different roles. He always wanted to score and he often did it. He had a good nose for goals, but was better at assists. His movements were always a threat to his opponents.”
