Inter Boss Antonio Conte Poised For New Coaching Rivalries On Serie A Return

Antonio Conte will pit his wits against various coaches for the first time when he returns to Serie A with Inter this season.

The Nerazzurri are due to discover their fixture schedule for the 2019-20 campaign in just over an hour’s time, with a ceremony held at Sky Sport’s headquarters in Milan.

Tuttosport reminded its readers this morning how Conte had not taken charge of a league match in Italy since 18 May 2014, when Juventus secured a record-breaking points total with a 3-0 win over Cagliari.

The upshot is that Juve, Milan, Lazio and Roma all now have coaches he has never come up against before, while Napoli boss Carlo Ancelotti has only crossed paths with him in the Champions League.

Conte has overseen 40 matches in total against the coaches he will face in Serie A this year, although only 22 have taken place in Italy’s top flight itself.

The former Chelsea and Italy boss has racked up 23 wins, 10 draws and seven defeats in those encounters; although that becomes 16 wins, four draws and two defeats if you only include Serie A fixtures.

Conte’s only losses in this league against coaches he will meet with Inter came on 23 October 2013, when Vincenzo Montella’s Fiorentina beat Juventus 4-2, and on 6 January 2010, when Walter Mazzarri’s Napoli secured a 2-0 success against Atalanta.

Ancelotti twice faced Conte in the Champions League group stage, with his Real Madrid side recording a 2-1 win and a 2-2 draw in the 2013-14 campaign.

Maurizio Sarri, Marco Giampaolo, Simone Inzaghi and Paulo Fonseca have never played him before in their coaching careers.
